Chapter 16

BREAKING POINT

NADIA

I STEP INTO the hallway to make my way back to my room when the pull of Jacqueline’s dream hits me hard. She’s sleeping more and more and will never feel fully rested, but I can’t stop myself. I’m addicted to invading her dreams. It’s too easy.

I glide into Jacqueline’s room. Pale sunlight shines on her face. She sleeps with half her body off the bed like she was too tired to get all the way in it. Reaching down, I touch my pale fingers to her temples.

The world shifts.

Hunter leans against a gray boulder, staring at an empty playground. A baseball field stretches to his right, but it doesn’t look like it has been used in ages. The grass is dead, the dugouts contain broken benches, and the bleachers have seen better days.

Hunter stands straighter. “Jacqueline’s having a hard time staying awake.”

Twisting my lips to the side, I nod. “It’s because of me.”

He steps closer and stares down at me. Reaching up, he tucks my hair behind my ear. “Don’t feel bad, Nadia.”

I pucker my lips. It’s easier said than done. Jacqueline hasn’t done anything wrong to me and even if Hunter thinks she deserves the fate we’re forcing on her, I don’t. “This is why I’m a monster.”

His brows furrow. “You’re not, though. You’re only coming here because of me. If I weren’t here, you’d never invade Jacqueline’s dreams.”

Tears blur my vision. “I hate this.”

He looks into my eyes for a few moments before leaning closer. “I don’t want you to feel this way. It was never my intention for you to feel guilty or hateful. I want you to be happy, just like you were when we first met.”

I close the space between our faces even more. “I don’t think I can.”

Hunter tilts his lips toward mine and whispers, “I wish I could fix it. You’re—God, Nadia. I’ll stay here forever. You don’t have to visit me anymore. Just forget about me. I can’t ask you to help me if this is what it’s doing to you.”

I blink my tears away. “I’m beyond considering helping you, Hunter. I—”

Brushing his lips to mine, Hunter cuts off my words with a kiss. His life force grazes against mine, and I can feel everything good swirling in his soul—his innocence, his desires, his hope—all these emotions light up our world through our kiss. His hands glide to my waist, pulling me closer, deepening our kiss until the world around us fades away, and I’m left hovering in a strange blend of shadows with Hunter outside Jacqueline’s dream.

As quickly as we leave the dream, we fall back into it. Hunter slowly pulls away, smiling while peering into my eyes, staring right at my soul in a moment I never want to end.

He kisses me again, feather soft, light, just teasing me with his lips. “I—”

The ground shakes, the sky cracking to cloud the world around us. It’s too soon. I just arrived. Something must be happening in the real world that’s causing Jacqueline’s dream to collapse.
